New Years Eve 2011

Dear Sharers of Our New Years Eve, 

This is an important time to take heed and take advantage of all the  information coming at us and to us from all the media, which so often is overwhelming, but still, in this country is 'free'.   Can you imagine living in a country where the press is not free?  Where it is controlled by the Government?  We really have to remember and thank the writers of our constitution where it is most relevant. I have trouble with the 'right to bear arms',  but in so far as it was sensitive to the period when it was written, I have to, as probably some of you do too, stretch my interpretation and just pray this year coming will prove it less necessary to carry dangerous weapons. 

I heard on CNN ( which I am including in my 'free press" category,) that there were more guns purchased in 2011 than ever before on record. This is one subject I pray over. It terrifies me that our seeing these pictures will cause people to feel unsafe.  I wish we could at least keep in our consciousnesses, that if we had seen Ivan the Terrible, or scenes of the Holocaust as we changed the channels, we would recognize that things have not gotten so much worse over the years.  in fact, I think the opposite is probably true. Even though I see the current devastation in Syria, to name only one place where the bloody scenes of battle are routine, I challenge myself to see it in the perspective of history.

 I want to pray for healing the planet in all ways. I pray to not forget history. The great orators who dignify the best in us are in my mind tonight.  

Quoting Abraham Lincoln in his first inaugural address, at the end he says:  "We are not enemies but friends. We must not be enemies. Tho passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds...when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature."

Maiden American

Here are a few snapshots taken at Midnight Farm (a store co-owned by Carly on Martha's Vineyard) on a Saturday in October, 2011.

Reflections in a sunglass bowl

 
 

We were at River Cafe. Myself and my friend Carinthia West, a smart and fun friend from across the "pond". She had a camera with her, as a new hobby was springing up. She was more accurately and is now: a photo journalist. These pictures were taken some time in the Spring of 1984. One of the many images contributing to a large and memorable scrap book of the Twin Towers and their neighboring skyscrapers at that time in our history. How powerful to see this photo now and to feel how it fits into the backdrop of our literally and eternally changed face.

Four years later, I was asked to write the soundtrack to the movie "Working Girl", the brilliant portrait of a young secretary who comes to work every morning on the Staten Island ferry, crossing the waters, aiming itself at the World Trade Center. She is approaching lower Manhattan and going to work, hoping to make it in the jungle that is the dog eat dog world of the business of making it "Big".

When I imagined what to write, I saw a Lower Manhattan, dancing to the dangerous jungle beats and rhythms of a war dance. How could we know that our trust would never be the same? On the morning of 9/11, that part of another childhood was over. We were afraid.

Our being appalled has relaxed into a vague facial expression that is askew and we are afraid to look straight on. How can we? There's only the stilted air. The expression on my face in the photo has disappeared, like all too many of our smiles, illusions, dreams, of our reactions to the masterpieces of man's creations, it's angelic designs of beauty and it's beliefs in a lasting peace.

Springtime on the Island

So, this is the time on the Island.   The apple blossoms ( which look like snow on the tops of the trees) mean there will be a great crop of apples.   The cherry blossoms are just about to be blown away at this evening's whim ( there's going to be wind and rain).

Molly can't resist being on this side of the camera's lens.   I'm just very simply: happy and thrilled to be part of this cloudy day, throwing the ball for her.   I saw a terrific movie last Sunday on Mothers Day called "Lady for a Day ".   A Frank Capra movie made in the early thirties.   See it.   It's such a feel good, witty movie.   An obvious precursor to "Guys and Dolls" based on a Damon Runyan story.

I have a wonderful new manager named Gail Gellman.   She manages Sugarland and along with her partner: Shania Twain .

Also, the signing with BMG Publishing is official!   Let me know your ideas for exploitation of my songs...on how they could be used creatively in movies or advertisements.
