Dear Sharers of Our New Years Eve,
This is an important time to take heed and take advantage of all the information coming at us and to us from all the media, which so often is overwhelming, but still, in this country is 'free'. Can you imagine living in a country where the press is not free? Where it is controlled by the Government? We really have to remember and thank the writers of our constitution where it is most relevant. I have trouble with the 'right to bear arms', but in so far as it was sensitive to the period when it was written, I have to, as probably some of you do too, stretch my interpretation and just pray this year coming will prove it less necessary to carry dangerous weapons.
I heard on CNN ( which I am including in my 'free press" category,) that there were more guns purchased in 2011 than ever before on record. This is one subject I pray over. It terrifies me that our seeing these pictures will cause people to feel unsafe. I wish we could at least keep in our consciousnesses, that if we had seen Ivan the Terrible, or scenes of the Holocaust as we changed the channels, we would recognize that things have not gotten so much worse over the years. in fact, I think the opposite is probably true. Even though I see the current devastation in Syria, to name only one place where the bloody scenes of battle are routine, I challenge myself to see it in the perspective of history.
I want to pray for healing the planet in all ways. I pray to not forget history. The great orators who dignify the best in us are in my mind tonight.
Quoting Abraham Lincoln in his first inaugural address, at the end he says: "We are not enemies but friends. We must not be enemies. Tho passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds...when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature."
Have a beautiful and Safe New Years Eve
Love, Carly
Great New Years Message. Firstly Ms Simon, I'm hoping to be a songwriter and maybe get this girl of my dreams. Is there a chance that you could give me advice on writing a song to make that girl feel be interested?

Eloquent, thank you Carly. May there be a lessening and easing of fear. Time is so short.

The increase in the sale of firearms is fine with me, and speaks a message to policy-makers which they can construe however they may as to how it reflects on their work. The right to protect myself with deadly force is necessary is equally as imporatant as the right to free speech, maybe even more important. The consensus in the small group of the Earth's population that I am in contact with seem to agree that 2011 can be improved on in any number of ways. Here's hoping your prayers are answered and we all have a better year in 2012.
Best Wishes....

Carly, you brought together some very important issues which impact us all. We need to be aware of what is happening all over this planet. Your take on looking at some situations with a perspective towards history is very appropriate. Many of the world's challenges have been seen before BUT not to take them for granted. We live in a great nation and we owe it to ourselves as well as future generations to leave them a world with dialogues begun and an end to the concept of enemies.
On a personal note - I have been a long time fan of yours and enjoy your wonderful lyrics and music (with credit to your co-writers). Your music tells a story and I will keep listening to the story as long as you continue writing and singing. Your voice is, in my mind, unique - beautiful - and so clear. Kudos to you.
Happy New Year to you and your family and all the best in 2012.

I appreciate what you had to say tonight in your blog. It definitely started me thinking as well as remembering that I noticed the country of South Korea does not have guns and outlaws them; and they get along just fine. Thanks for a thoughtful post.

Thanks for the wonderful message and all the wonderful music you have made. It has meant the world to me and helped me express feelings I have so clearly.

Carly, your message was heartfelt. I believe you have a tender soul, I feel this from what you have written and from your exceptional music. But, I must disagree with your stand on guns. Guns are not an enemy. Only those who mis-use guns. Factually, medical doctors kill more people than guns.

Our biggest worry should not be Syria, where a liberation-struggle is going on, but be the big oil-companies killing thousands of people in the third world. The production of palm-oil for the cosmetics companies convert thousands of acres of native forest to plantations destoying native tribes livelyhood and converting the survivors into near-slave labours. As long as we consume on this massive scale (and the USA is by far the worst), the planet is in dire straits . . .
But thanks for all the great music and best wishes for 2012, your loyal fan:

If we forget history, then we are doomed to repeat our mistakes. The majority of whats happening today is because people have forgot history and have become terribly angry and unstable. Everyone only need to look at whats going on in Israel and Gaza and Syria also to see mans incapability to find peaceful resolution. Pride and Anger have got in the way. Huberous now runs the gambit.Meanwhile the natural world we live in is being systematically, chemically, and methodically slowly destroyed. This year i'm wishing and praying for peaceful solutions for the angry and oppressed or victimized. I'm praying for a stronger movement in stopping the chemtrails, and stopping the slow destruction of our world in which we live in. The slow destruction of our natural resources that we will never be able to get back, and in the end will kill us all. I'm praying for people to wake up. We are slowly destroying each other and the world we live in. I'm praying that the veil will be lifted and removed so people can actually see what has been going on. Thank you Carly for all that you shared. I love your heart and your sensitivity. It shows in your music. I wish more were like you in this world. We can only continue to speak out about peace and saving our environment. Even when it feels like it will never change. Sometimes persistence can bring about good things. No one will ever know if we give up. *`PEACE, ~LOVE~ AND *`HARMONY.*

As someone who lives close to a city jail and in a neighborhood that has had some released jail residents break in and go after women in their homes I believe that women should be able to protect themselves with guns if necessary. If a man breaks into a woman's home what will she say if she can't protect herself? Please wait 20 minutes for the police to get here, Mr. Criminal? Carly, you live in a wealthy area and as I've learned and seen it's wealthy areas that are policed much better and tighter than the rest of us "poor" not-so-well-to-do people. Not to mention wealthy areas don't get as much crime as less well to do areas. The town I live in because of the economy has had to let go of a large portion of their police force and so it takes longer for the police to get to an emergency situation. As a woman I don't feel safe and I can't rely on the police to protect me all the time. A street over from me live a couple sex offenders, documented, it's not a safe area I live in and I can't move at this time.
I also want to add that even though I'm pro guns and pro arms I'm not a red necked conservative hick as it seems many pro gun people are portrayed as. I simply believe that the bad guys will ALWAYS have guns, and drugs etc., cause they're exactly that, the BAD guys. There is nothing wrong with good people wanting to keep themselves and their families and homes safe, especially in not-so-well-to-do areas like mine. And,again, especially in areas where there are lots of bad guys and a small police force.
We should all be able to bear arms! But we really shouldn't have to, I wish we didn't. And it's a choice. We don't have to bear arms but people who want to should be able to.
Best wishes to you and yours Carly! I hope that 2012 will bring some new music from you! Many blessings and creativity to you!

Carly:
I am a woman professional who works in downtown NYC. I grew up and began working the 1980s. I enjoyed and remember Working Girl and your powerful music quite well.
Given all the changes to New York / Wall Street (9/11, Occupy, etc.) in the last 2 decades, perhaps you will consider writing a new song that reflects how we're all feeling today. The mighty Hudson river indeed still runs, but is that power the same? And women's voices?
Kindly,

In theory is sounds all nice and comfy; a world without guns--marveling in the milk and honey of human kindness. You make really good music Carly; stick to music--and let the "talking heads" of television do all the political commentary.

We humans are all we have so we have to take care of each other and be open to others opinions and be really thankful we live in a place where we still can have our own opinions. I too have the opinion that you have a powerful voice and write beautiful music...long live Carly!

Wow, I'm surprised by the anti-gun responses. The right to bear arms is something we have to accept (or challenge). I took the message to pray for peace. A lot of bad stuff is going down and, I think, Carly only wants it to get better.....guns or no guns.

Super dear Carly, I live in São Paulo ( Brazil )- a sick city in many ways: polSuper dear Carly,
I lution, violence, homeless and addicted population...
At the same time, São Paulo has beautiful theater, expensive restaurant, a lot of shopping centers...
Well, it's a terrible contrast which results in more revolt.
I don't think arms or guns can be the solution - by the way - many people died with their own guns ( many children died in the arms of their parents !! ).
So, Carly, I'm with you - we have to pray increasingly, endlessly for LOVE, PEACE and
HEALTHY VIBRATION to neutralize or transmute bad intentions...
Happy New Year!!!

Hi,
I was bad and did read the new book (from the library---I did not buy it)...it is not well written and so much was actually taken from your website and, as was reported, old magazine articles. I am sorry you have to endure this kind of intrusion into your personal life.
I envy you the relationship you had with Mrs Onassis...she must have been the most amazing friend.
Good fortune in 2012 and please keep making such great music.
